„HOW TO SURVIVE SUMMER IN THE 

CITY – CULTURAL ATTRACTIONS”

Summer in the big city can sometimes be difficult. Most of us dream about holidays, relaxation and escape from our day-to-day routine, but with our work commitments, we often have to plan our holidays down to the exact day. How do we then make the best of two months of summer and good weather? (Well, perhaps in London’s case it’s just two months of summer…)

I’ve written up a list of a few attractions for you; places and events that I think are well worth a visit during your summer break. Who knows - maybe they’ll become your getaway during your weekends and evenings after work :).

Lato w dużych metropoliach bywa w szczególności trudne. Większość z nas marzy o wakacjach, odpoczynku z daleka od naszej codzienności, ale ze względu na nasze zobowiązania oraz pracę, okres wakacyjny mamy wyliczony co do dnia. Jak zatem sprawić aby te dwa miesiąca okresu letniego, pogody (no w Londynie może nie zawsze ona dopisuję, ale kiedy już się pojawi to trzeba czerpać z niej garściami) wykorzystać najlepiej jak się da?

Przygotowałam dla was zestawienie kilku atrakcji, miejsc oraz wydarzeń, które moim zdaniem są warte uwagi oraz mogą okazać się miła odskocznią podczas weekendu czy popołudnie po pracy :). 

VOGUE

As I mentioned in my previous cultural guide (insert a link here), the British issue of Vogue magazine is celebrating their 100th anniversary this year. To mark this occasion, the June issue of Vogue had the pleasure of having The Duchess of Cambridge as the subject of their front cover. Those photographs have gone on to feature in the Vogue exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in a celebration of some of the most distinguished photography captured over the past century.

Celebration of their 100^th anniversary are still ongoing with the Vogue pop-up café that can be found in L’Orchidee Patisserie, open until the 25^th September. It is located in the Westfield shopping Centre, Ariel Way, W12

Jak już pisałam wam w poprzednim poradniku kulturowym, brytyjskie wydanie miesięcznika Vogue obchodzi w tym roku swoje setne urodziny. Z tej też okazji czerwcowe wydanie tego magazynu miało okazję gościć na okładce księżną Cambridge, której to też fotografie zostały wystawione w National Portrait Gallery podczas wystawy uświęcającej najwybitniejsze prace na przestrzeni tych 100 lat.

Świętowanie setnych urodzin zdaje się nie mieć końca a w L’Orchidee Patisserie otworzono  kawiarnie Vogue, która będzie trwała aż do 25 września. Lokalizacja tej kawiarni to centrum handlowe Westfield, które znajduje się przy Ariel Way, W12.

LITTLE VENICE

“Little Venice” is a mini version of the harbours that are famous to the original city. Like actual Venice, Little Venice in London offers rides on hitched boats, as well as other attractions. There are several restaurants and pubs where you can have a drink and a bite to eat, and a family-picnic spot with a magnificent view over the creek!

As long as the weather is favourable, I am of the opinion that it would be ideal place for a romantic afternoon with your loved one, a relaxing and casual space for time with friends, and peaceful enough for quality time with yourself – with a picnic blanket, a pitcher of lemonade and a good book. Is there anything more relaxing?

„Mala Wenecja” to mini wersja portu rodem z Wenecji, w którym przycumowane jest całkiem sporo różnego rodzaju łódek. Idealna lokazlizacja (znajduje się niedaleko Camden Town) i ma do zaoferowania naprawdę sporo atrakcji. Począwszy od restauracji oraz barów gdzie możemy usiąść oraz coś zjeść, miejsce na piknik z widokiem na zatoczkę a co najważniejsze to sami możemy przepłynąć się wzdłuż kanału jedną z takich łódek!

Podczas sprzyjającej pogody mogę nawet stwierdzić, że byłoby to idealne miejsce na romantyczne popołudnie we dwoje bądź wypad z przyjaciółmi czy najzwyczajniej chwilą dla samej siebie – rozłożony koc, lemoniada oraz dobrą książka. Czy jest coś bardziej odprężającego? :)

WORLD OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Photography has long since been a cornerstone of human enjoyment. It is one of the only ways to keep at least a small part of the moment exactly as it happened, long after it has finished. For some people, however, photography is a passion and the ultimate expression. Photography is itself an art form – and an art form that you can learn! :)

William Eggleston is a master of the form. A collection of portraits taken by Eggleston can be seen in the National Portrait Gallery, which is located in Trafalgar Square. If you are curious about his career and what makes a good portrait, then it is a must see! The exhibition will start on the 21^st July and will run until the 23^rd of October this year.

British photographer Terence Donovan is another whose work can be seen during summer.  A collection of his portraits can be seen in the Photography Gallery in London. The exhibition will start on the 15^th July and will last until the 25^th of September this year. Donovan was also known for his use of the phrase “speed of light” – and the exhibition takes the phrase as its name, too. If you have an interest in fashion photography, then his name might already be a familiar one. This is because he coordinated and led many photoshoots for magazines like Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. A master of photography in many forms, his work has lasted until today. If you would like to see his photographs, the Gallery is located on 16-18 Ramillies St, W1F, in London.

Fotografia od zawsze odgrywa ważna rolę w naszym życiu. Jest to jedyny sposób aby chociaż po części zatrzymać dany moment. Dla niektórych jednak jest to całe życie, to ich pasja, w której czują się najbardziej spełnieni. Jedno jest pewne, fotografia jest sztuką, ale na szczęście sztuką, której można się nauczyć! :)

William Eggleston jest właśnie jedną z tych osób, dla których fotografia to nie tylko sposób na zarabianie pieniędzy. Kolekcja ujęć wykonanych przez Williama została wywieszona w Galerii Narodowej na Trafalgar Square w Londynie. Jeżeli jesteście zatem ciekawi jak ewoluował talent tego fotografa, koniecznie musicie tam zajrzeć! Wystawa rozpocznie się 21 lipca i trwać będzie do 23 października tego roku.

Renomowany Brytyjski fotograf Terence Donovan jest kolejnym fotografem, którego prace możemy zobaczyć podczas wakacji. Retrospespekcja jego portretów znajduje się w galerii fotograficznej w Londynie. Wystawa rozpocznie się w piątek 15 lipca i trwać będzie aż do 25 września tego roku.

Terence Donovan to fotograf, który znany był z notorycznego użycia sformułowania „predkosc swiatla” (taki też tytuł nosi wystawa). Dla wielbicieli fotografii modowej jego nazwisko może wydać się znajome. Wszystko za sprawą tego, że Terence często wykonywał zdjęcia dla magazynów takich jak Harper’s Bazaar oraz Vogue. Mistrz fotografii powojennych czasów, który z aparatu „wyciskal” wszystko to na co bylo go stać. Jeżeli jesteście ciekawi jego prac, galeria zlokalizowana jest przy 16-18 Ramillies St, W1F w Londynie.

ROOFTOP BAR and NOT ONLY – SHOREDITCH HOUSE

One of the things I love the most about London are the rooftop restaurants with panoramic views over the whole of the city. Could there be anything more romantic than a dinner with a view of the capital at night? Shoreditch House is the place where you can find this and more (and the pool that is at the top of this post), but let’s focus on the restaurant for now. The whole house has a few restaurants, including the one on top, which as well as a delicious menu offers a magical time. Who with? Well, the choice is yours :).

Jedna z rzeczy, które kocham w Londynie to – restauracje na dachach budynków. Czy może być coś bardziej romantycznego niż kolacja z widokiem na skąpane w świetle nocy miasto? Shoreditch House to miejsce, w którym znajduje się absolutnie wszystko (na czele z basenem, którego zdjęcie widzieliście na samym początku tego wpisu), ale na chwilę obecną skupmy się na restauracji. W całym budynku znajduje się ich kilka w tym właśnie ta na samej górze, która oferuje nie tylko menu pełne pyszności, ale i magiczne chwilę. Z kim? To już zależy od was samych :)

ROOFTOP BAR

The rooftop restaurant offers Italian cuisine – and this is something that was especially appealing to me. (My sincere love of pasta – in literally any form – means that I must have been Italian in a previous life :D). If you prefer to have a more sheltered dinner, you can always enjoy a glorious morning drinking coffee with the view over the city. The restaurant is located on the 6^th floor of Shoreditch House. It is open daily from 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

BAR NA DACHU

Restauracja na dachu ma w swojej ofercie dania inspirowane kuchnią włoską – czyli coś dla mnie (poprzez moje uwielbienie do makaronów pod każdą postacią, zaczęłam się zastanawiać czy ja przypadkiem nie byłam włoszką w poprzednim wcieleniu :D). Jeżeli kolację wolicie zjeść w domowym zaciszu to zawsze możecie rozkoszować się śniadaniem na 6 piętrze Shoreditch House. Restauracja jest otwarta codziennie od 7 – 23:30 a w niedzielę od 8-22.30.

Mandolin Aegean Bistro is an outdoor garden restaurant which offers a Greek menu. Fish covered with a fresh herbs is just a small sample from their extensive menu. With a stylish interior and beautiful décor - it is all you need for a moment to fully relax :)

As I have already mentioned, there is also a swimming pool” at Shoreditch House. It is not just a swimming pool, surrounded as it is by the skyscrapers nearby, providing a fantastic view. The whole building has magical interior décor, which truly compliments the entire aesthetic of the place. There are red-white striped sunbeds with beige sunshades, and a little but stylish table on the side assigned to each sunbed. The temperature in the pool is always 26 degrees – the perfect temperature for relaxation. If you would like to get more information, take a look on their website – here! :)

BASEN

Jak już zdążyłam wam wspomnieć, w “Shoreditch House” znajduje się również basen i to nie byle jaki chociażby za sprawą tego pięknego widoku, który rozpościerającego się na drapacze chmur usytuowane w niedalekim dystansie od Shoreditch. Cały budynek ma swój magiczny wystrój i styl, któremu większość pomieszczeń stara się być wierna, dlatego nie dziwi fakt, że wystrój basenu jest zachowany w podobnym stylu. Czerwono-białe leżaki otoczone beżowymi parasolami z frędzlami u dołu oraz szykownymi stoliczkami po boku. Temperatura wody zawsze wynosi 26 stopni. PICNIC TIME – HYDE PARK

Hyde Park is a place where there is always something happening. Located in the heart of London it attracts visitors from all over with festivals and events. But in the summer time it has something extra to offer – deckchairs! :) The only thing that comes to my mind right now is to fill a picnic basket with some deliciousness, a bottle of lemonade or a bottle of wine, and then to take a blanket and some good company! :)

Hyde Park to miejsce, w którym praktycznie zawsze się coś dzieje. Zlokalizowany w samym centrum Londynu daje wiele możliwości. Nic więc dziwnego, że odbywa się tam większość festynów, czy imprez na świeżym powietrzu. Niemniej jednak w lecie ma do zaoferowania – leżaki! :)  Jedyne co mi zatem przychodzi do głowy to wypełnić piknikowy kosz pysznościami, butelką lemoniady bądź wina, koc oraz dobre towarzystwo! :)
