LITERACKI MAJ: „ANOMALIA” HERVÉ LE TELLIER

I haven't read such a good book for a long time. “The Anomaly” was published in 2020 by the French writer Hervé Le Tellier. The book quickly made it to the national bestseller list and sold over a million copies in France alone. This literary masterpiece was also awarded the Goncourt Prize. One year later, the book was published in English, which met with positive reviews in the literary press from the very beginning. It didn't take long for “The Anomaly” to enter the world's bestseller list. I rarely have such flattering opinions at the beginning, but after the first chapter (and they are rather short), I had a thorough understanding of the phenomenon of this novel. You probably know this feeling when, while reading a book, you flip page after page faster and faster to discover the next fate of its characters. This is one of those species that you literally cannot tear yourself away from.

The book is divided into chapters with the stories of various characters. In this way, we get to know different characters living in different environments; we have here, for example, Blake, who is a man with two faces - on the one hand he is an exemplary father and husband, and on the other hand, a paid murderer; a writer who, despite his brilliant literary talent, did not achieve spectacular success common for this profession; an elderly architect who accidentally meets and falls in love with a young Lucy, who is a film editor; an American soldier with his family, and a few more. It cannot be denied that they are extremely interesting, and the stories related to them are presented in a very moral, but accurate and brilliant way, and when a turning point has occurred, the plot is suddenly cut off and the author introduces us to another character. How can you guess then I was overwhelmed by the feeling of "but how? What's next?". So I start to read on, another story and a repetition of entertainment again. On the one hand, it annoyed me, but on the other hand, I wanted to read more and more, and even faster, to finally find out the truth. I must admit that this is a very clever move by the author, who makes the reader directly dependent on "The Anomaly". However, what is important in this book is that despite the many stories, quite a large number of characters, it is very easy to find yourself in it. After a while, I had the impression that I knew them all very well, and each return to the continuation of the previously started thread, I could easily read on.

What makes this book unique? On the one hand, it is a novel of manners, which actually combines a little bit of everything - it is like a good thriller, and a typical fiction. On the other hand, apart from these short stories - that is, the introduction to life of each of the characters, the story of the book concerns the flight of the AirLines from Paris to New York, on which all the above-mentioned characters were aboard. During the flight, turbulence occurs, which forces the plane to make an emergency landing. This situation turns out to be the climax, however, which shows that nothing in our lives is as it seems. Actually, the whole novel is some kind of intrigue / puzzle that focuses on the question "what drives our life"? Are these actually our own choices? As you can imagine, these are rather unresolved issues, so it could be said that "The Anomaly" also belongs to the philosophical genre, and this is what makes it unique. It awakens many insights in the reader that are often relevant to our own lives. Reading the reviews before buying this book, I read somewhere that "It is a" page-turner "- reading, we wait impatiently for what will happen next. The sensational plot draws us more than Netflix series. " Well, in retrospect, I couldn't disagree with that statement. In order not to reveal any more (although I do think I managed to be more reserved with spoiler this time), I just encourage you to read “The Anomaly”. I am sure you will not be disappointed.

. . . .

Zapewne znacie to uczucie, kiedy czytając jakąś książkę, wertujecie kartkę za kartką coraz to szybciej, aby odkryć kolejne losy jej bohaterów.

Zaczynam więc czytać dalej, kolejna historia i znowu powtórka z rozrywki. Z jednej strony mnie to denerwowało, ale z drugiej pragnęłam czytać dalej i jeszcze więcej i jeszcze szybciej, aby w końcu poznać prawdę.
